Maxwell's E-Portfolio

Being An AdVENTURE Student

Hello, I am Maxwell and I attend to a program called AdVENTURE located at Leonard Herman Intermediate School. AdVENTURE is based off system of education known as STEM; science, technology, engineering, and math. It has a wide range of teachers, covering grades 6-8. Personally, I joined AdVENTURE entering 7th grade and though I have only been here for one year, I have learned and acquired an extraordinary amount of knowledge. It means a lot to be at AdVENTURE, to be part of such a close community, having access to many technological items, and experiencing project-based learning.

As I said, I entered AdVENTURE as a 7th grader, but even as the “new kid” everyone accepted and welcomed me into the program and class. After the first few days, I was already friends with many people in my class and very comfortable with the teachers. I quickly learned how AdVENTURE worked and knew my way around the AdVENTURE and Herman campus. At AdVENTURE everyone gets along, from hanging out during break and lunch together to collaborating with each other on a project. Over the span of this year, I have become friends with many others and come to love this program even more.

AdVENTURE provides access to many technological items. I feel they are very successful in giving students a chance to use and learn about technology. Every class, other than P.E., offers a laptop, giving opportunities to learn and research using the internet. Many projects, such as this very one, and other activities are used with online tools, like google docs and wix. Every week I learn something new, either about technology itself, or from using technology. I now know and have access to many more technological and computer tools as well as just overall knowledge of technology.

AdVENTURE teaches using project-based learning. For almost every topic covered in a subject you are assigned one or two projects to reflect on what you have learned on that topic. As you explore my website, you will notice that projects are often in groups of 2-4 and have a fun and intriguing backstory, often made-up to create a challenge you must complete. Though there are numerous projects, you are given plenty of freedom and choices. Many of the project my class and I are assigned have an option to choose what you want to do. This means that instead of being assigned just one choice that you must complete, you have multiple categories to choose from. Within these categories there are even more options. In other words, you have a great deal freedom while doing projects.

Throughout this year, I have experience many great AdVENTUREs, each teaching me a lesson for the present and future. From creating websites and coding, to researching and writing, my exposure to AdVENTURE has provided me much, much more than I could imagine. I couldn’t have asked for better friends, technology, or projects. AdVENTURE has changed me so much, and taught me even more.
